PHYSIQUE SCULPTING
SCULPT YOUR PHYSIQUE WITH OWNER MATT LEIN
SCULPTING YOUR PHYSIQUE IS A COMMON GOAL
Sculpting a great looking physique is one of the most common goals that brings people to Georgia Personal Training, yet often times new clients are hesitant to admit their primary goal is building a better body. Typically clients will list “looking better” as priority three or four, behind things like gaining strength, improving endurance, being healthier, etc. Today’s society often discourages self improvement and instead encourages embracing the status quo.
We are taught to accept who we are and find contentment in mediocrity rather than pursuing something better. At GPT, we are in the business of pursuing greatness. There is no such thing as good enough. There is no finish line to your fitness journey or your life. Every day we strive to make our clients the absolute best possible version of themselves both mentally and physically.
AN UNFORTUNATE REALITY
The fact of the matter is, very few people walking around are truly satisfied with how they look. One in every three American adults are overweight. Do you think they would prefer to look and feel better? Of course they would. But the combination of societal pressure, the stress of daily life, lack of motivation, lack of knowledge, and the underlying fear of failure keep them on the sidelines. At GPT, we teach clients to set wide ranging and lofty goals. A client’s health is always our primary concern, but developing the body they’ve always dreamed of is something we encourage and take great pride in helping them achieve.
“People don’t want to admit that sculpting a great looking body is their primary goal. I think it’s the desire to avoid appearing shallow or superficial. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to improve your physique for cosmetic reasons. A better looking body can do wonders for your confidence, self esteem, social life, relationships, even your career. Everybody wants to walk past a mirror and be happy with the reflection they see staring back at them.” – GPT Owner Matt Lein
28 YEARS OLD VS 35 YEARS OLD
Working with Georgia Personal Training and following a scientific approach to physique sculpting will produce results like what you see above. The before picture is not only 12 years younger in age, but also 10 pounds lighter in weight. Yet the after photo physique appears much leaner and defined even at a heavier weight. This is a perfect visual example of the power of strength training. Adding muscle to your physique will transform your overall composition, and make it easier to keep body fat levels low all year round.
HOW DO YOU SCULPT A GREAT PHYSIQUE
Building a great physique consists of targeted muscular development, decreasing body fat, and changing your overall body composition. Simply put, the goal is to increase muscle mass in specific areas while simultaneously melting the layer of body fat that sit on top of muscle (subcutaneous fat). The end result being a well defined, toned appearance. Since muscle works as a natural fat burner, the more we add, the easier the fat burning process will become.
Obviously, every client has a different idea of what looks good, and our job is to help them create that body. Some clients want more muscle mass, bigger chest, wider shoulders, etc. While others want a lean, toned appearance with defined arms, abs, glutes, and legs. It is not our place to tell a client what their goals should be, but rather to implement the right training program to achieve the goals they laid out for us.
Regardless of the specific goals we are striving for, the primary tools for physique sculpting are hypertrophic weight training, metabolic conditioning, and a strategic nutritional plan. There is no physique training program in the world that will work without a proper diet. Muscle needs calories and protein to grow, but we also need a caloric deficit to burn fat. This is where the process gets complicated.
Simplify things by working with one of our professional physique coaches. GPT physique coaches will take you through 2-3 hands on personal training sessions per week customized to your specific physique goals. They will also design you a custom off day workout program and diet regimen that will optimize fat loss and muscle growth simultaneously.

HYPERTROPHIC WEIGHT TRAINING
Hypertrophic Training is a style of weight training specifically designed to stimulate muscle growth. Well, doesn’t all weight training do that? Not necessarily. Certain lifts that are designed for building functional, total body strength like dead lifts, squats, and power cleans. While these lifts are foundational to a strength building program, a hypertrophic program will often utilize more isolated movements like hip thrusts, hamstring curls, leg extensions, etc.
The larger compound movements are always effective at building mass, but in a hypertrophic program, the goal is not just building mass, but rather building targeted mass. Like a sculptor adding more clay to a statue, you target specific areas of the body, isolate them, and add more muscle to achieve the desired look.
There are many different proven methods for building muscle mass, but there is also much debate as to which are best. The truth is, there isn’t necessarily one specific system that will work for everyone. At GPT, we take an all-encompassing approach to hypertrophic training based on the foundational principles of progressive overload and muscle confusion. People often ask, “should I use free weights or machines, should I lift heavy or light, compound lifts or isolation lifts, etc.” Our answer is all of the above.
Remember this, the most important element in stimulating muscle growth is not what you do, but how you do it. The true keys to success are perfecting lifting technique, developing the mind muscle connection, progressively increasing the intensity of your training, and continuously changing things up to avoid hitting plateaus. If you’re doing these things you are guaranteed to see tangible results regardless of the exact exercises or equipment used.

DECREASE BODY FAT & CHANGE BODY COMPOSITION
Most people would agree that a huge beer belly, flabby arms, and a double chin are not characteristics of their ideal physique. Which is why over 50% of Americans are actively trying to lose weight according to the CDC. Everyone wants to feel better and more confident about the way they look, and decreasing body fat is the most common goal. Getting rid of stubborn body fat is essential for sculpting your best physique. However, fat reduction is an entirely different undertaking than hypertrophic weight training.
While muscle can be selectively added to specific areas of the body, you cannot pick and choose which areas to burn fat from. Targeted fat loss, also known as “spot reduction” is a type of exercise that many people turn to when trying to slim down specific areas of their bodies. Unfortunately, spot reduction is actually a myth that was debunked decades ago.
YOU CANNOT SPOT REDUCE BODY FAT
There is actually no such thing as spot reduction. Moreover, doing crunches and side bends will not burn body fat from your stomach and love handles. Doing triceps extensions will not burn the annoying fat under your arms. The reason for this is the way the body breaks down stored fat for energy. Before they can be burned, fat cells must be broken down into smaller sections called free fatty acids and glycerol, which are able to enter the bloodstream. During exercise, the free fatty acids and glycerol used as fuel are pulled from all over the body, not specifically from the area being exercised. The process works exactly like gasoline being consumed by a car engine.
Therefore there is no way to isolate fat burning to a specific problem area. Think of body fat reduction as peeling the layers of an onion. Continue peeling the entire onion, layer by layer, until you reach the desired result. You can accomplish this by utilizing an all encompassing strategy of strength training, metabolic conditioning, and diet.
