I live in Oklahoma and my son went to The University of Oklahoma. He is a huge Sooner fan and asked me to go to a few Softball Games this year. Agility, Speed, Power, Arm Strength

Simply put, baseball performance training is athletic training specifically designed to produce better baseball players. To achieve this objective, the training focuses on the specific athletic skills, and specialized movement patterns most utilized on the baseball field. The objective of baseball performance training is to increase bat speed and exit velocity, increase throwing velocity on the mound and in the field, increase speed on the bases and lower 60 times, increase agility and range on defense, enhance durability, and decrease an athlete’s risk of injury.

Baseball is a difficult sport to prepare for in that it requires a wide array of athletic skills in combination with a very high level of technical proficiency. A baseball player must strive to be as physically strong and powerful as possible, but in doing so, he must also maintain flexibility, range and fluidity of motion. In other words, strength must be increased, but if doing so decreases technical proficiency or restricts movement, the end result will be minimal, or even diminished, on field results. Optimal strength training results for baseball will only be achieved by athletes that understand how bat speed and velocity are created. They aren’t created in the pecs and biceps. Baseball power comes primarily from the legs, core, and posterior chain. In addition, baseball power is dependent on force production, which means speed of movement is equally important to the loads one can move.

In today’s competitive baseball arena, players who are not working to improve their athletic abilities with the same dedication they apply to their baseball skills, are simply not going to be able to compete at the highest levels of baseball. It’s the era of stat cast, exit velo, and launch angle.

Every year players are getting bigger, stronger, and faster than the previous generation. Every young player must understand that how far they go in baseball will NOT be determined by their batting average, but by their speed, power, and arm strength.
